St Joseph's provides programs, workshops and coaching to help the development and education of our umpires.
Key components of umpiring include:
1. Introduction to Umpiring Course
2. Workshops
3. Rule Discussions
4. Game Practice with coaching
Umpiring can provide more than just the ability to officiate the rules of netball. It provides the opportunity to make friends for life, be a part of a vibrant netball community, as well as ensuring everyone can play the game in a safe, fair, and enjoyable environment.
Umpiring helps to develop a lifetime of skills including, communication, leadership, and resilience, whilst subsequently contributing to a healthy lifestyle with a pathway to participate in the sport at the highest level.

Umpires
are valued members of our community, and we look forward to joining you on your
umpiring journey in 2026.
• All umpires must register with St Joseph’s Netball Club before
participation. If you are a player also tick the umpire box when registering in Netball Connect.
• 70% pass mark in Online Theory Exam
• Attend (or have attended in the past) an Introduction to Umpiring
Course (run by St Joseph’s/WDNA)
• Attend compulsory workshops and rules discussions held by St Joseph’s
• Be available for St Joseph’s
junior game selection
trials at the beginning of each season,
with umpire coaches (game practice)
• Recommended age: turning 13 years.
• Experience and development level
• Availability and personal game playing commitments
• Suitability of the match for their development (as a small Club
opportunities are limited)
• Availability of St Joseph’s umpire coaches
• Compliance with WDNA’s NSG Policy
• Umpire allocations are made by the Umpire
Coordinator in consultation with St Joseph’s
experienced umpire coaches,
and their decision is final
• Arrive 15 minutes before the game
• Wear St Joseph’s umpire uniform (appropriate footwear and whistle)
• Umpire fairly and consistently
• Be receptive to coaching and accept feedback
• If unavailable for duty, notify the Umpire Coordinator as soon as possible
• St Joseph’s Gratuity
Award – Awarded to a trainee umpire developing the skills and technique to umpire a game
without support for a full game. (Club Awarded)
• WDNA Award – Awarded to an umpire
demonstrating developing skills
in basic game management to keep the game moving and maintain player
safety on low to average junior games. (Club Awarded)
• National Badge – Awarded through the Netball Australia Umpire
Accreditation System.
• Finals game umpires are selected and allocated by the WDNA Umpire
Convenor (through an EOI).
• Coaching is provided to trainee umpires throughout the season by
experienced Nationally Badged Umpires, allocated depending on their
availability. Trainee Umpires
are expected to take part in development sessions and accept
feedback constructively.
